[Top 15] The Witcher 3 Best Weapons (And How To Get Them)

witcher 3 weapons
witcher 3 wild hunt, best weapons, best weapons ranked

There are tons of video game characters that come to mind when you think of “white-haired warrior”, but among the most notable of these characters is Geralt of Rivia from the critically acclaimed Witcher franchise. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released in 2015 and quickly rose to fame for its intricate open world, strategic gameplay, and the unforgettable lore of Andrzej Sapkowski. Your success in defeating challenging foes in The Witcher 3 relies heavily on the type of armor and weapons you equip Geralt with. Today, we’re going to discuss the best weapons in The Witcher 3 and how to find them.

15. Viper Silver Sword - Best for Beginners

Viper Steel Sword

Beginning with number 15, the Viper Steel Sword belongs to the Viper School gear set, a sword that you can find at the beginning of the game when you’re still a fresh Witcher noob. To find this sword, you’ll need to be in White Orchard, specifically the graveyard across from the Woesong Bridge village. Once here, all you need to do is kill the wraith guarding the crypt and you’ll find the instructions for crafting the Viper Silver Sword. What I like about the Viper Silver Sword is that it’s an amature weapon perfect for novice players who are still getting used to the gameplay. It’s also not very heavy and won’t weigh you down like other weapons. This sword gives you helpful perks in combat that will make defeating lower-grade monsters and bandits much easier:

  • +20% Damage - When you strike your enemy, you’ll inflict 20% more damage to their health meter than you would with one of Geralt’s generic weapons. This will help you defeat your enemies quicker.
  • +10% chance to poison - You’ll have a 10% chance to poison your enemy when you land a blow, increasing your odds of defeating your enemy quicker if they do get poisoned and their health meter declines even more rapidly.
  • +10% Aard Sign - Carrying this weapon will boost your Aard Sign and allow you to blast your enemies with a greater intensity, resulting in an easier target.

14. Viper Steel Sword - Best for Beginners

Viper Silver Sword

Next we have the Viper Silver Sword’s cousin, the Viper Steel Sword. Also a member of the Viper School gear, the Steel Sword is very useful for players who are new to The Witcher and want to level up fast at the start of the game.

To find the weapon, go east from Woesong Bridge towards the Ransacked Village. You can easily find your way there if you open your map and place a marker. Make your way through the forest close to the village and you’ll find a fortress.

The fortress lies in mild ruins so you’ll have no problem scaling the side.Anticipate running into a couple lower-grade bandits that won’t be much of a challenge, however, you’ll want to kill the bandit with the bow first so you’re not skewered with arrows every couple seconds.

Once they’re all defeated and you loot their corpses for valuables, make your way up the fortress where you’ll find a chest. In the chest you’ll find the recipe to craft the Viper Steel Sword.

While I don’t think the Viper Steel Sword is better than the Silver Sword, I’m still a huge advocate for the Steel Sword. It’s a bit easier to obtain and it’s not as hard to craft as the Silver Sword is which needs a dimeritium ingot, a more difficult ingredient to obtain. However, the Steel Sword has its perks:

  • +15% chance to poison enemies - Every blow you land to your enemies you are 15% more likely to poison them and get the job done quicker.
  • +5% bonus experience for everything you kill - This is a huge perk. For every foe you defeat your experience advances 5%, making it easy to level up in the beginning of the game.

13. Headhunter Steel Sword - Best for When You Arrive in Velen

Headhunter Steel Sword

The moment you first step foot into Velen you’ll probably still be a noob. This is ideal, especially if you’re level four. When you hit level four you’re going to want to pick up the Headhunter Steel Sword.

Travel northeast of Hindhold to the location on the map that highlights a hidden treasure chest. You can place a marker on your map to navigate there quickly. When you arrive, get ready to drop kick the  surrounding drowners guarding the area.

Once you lay out those pesky drowners, use your Witcher senses to find the locked chest close by. Continue to use your senses and follow a blood trail that will lead you to find a key on the corpse of a deserter. Unlock the chest and you’ll find the Headhunter.

What I like about the Headhunter is its convenience: After you advance to level four you can pick it up whenever you want for some extra perks at the beginning of the game. The perks are also incredibly beneficial when fighting higher-grade armored humans.

  • +25 Armor piercing - Boost damage on humans wearing frustratingly strong armor.
  • +40% critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash.
  • +6% critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +2% chance to dismember - Though morbid, dismembering your enemies will work to your advantage

12. Griffin Steel Sword - Best for Attack and Sign Combination

Griffin Steel Sword

Congratulations, you’re no longer a noob, but you must be at a minimum of level 11 to acquire the Griffin Steel Sword. The sword is located in Velen at the abandoned fortress at Hindhold. Be ready to face off with some difficult Endrega Workers, Endrega Warriors, and a couple Harpies.

Once you’ve defeated the monsters, make your way through the fortress and you’ll come across the diagram for the Griffin Steel Sword.

This Griffin Steel Sword is great for players who are avid sign users in combat because of its sign perk. The combination of signs and physical blows during battle will revolutionize your gameplay.

  • +5% Sign intensity - Increase the intensity of Quen, Aard, Yrden, Igni, and Axii for a powerhouse of signs.
  • +5% Bonus experience from humans and nonhumans - Gain bonus experience everytime you kill a bandit or a monster.

11. Moonblade - Best for Any Level

Moonblade

The Moonblade is considered a relic blade, making its debut appearance in the very first Witcher game. Since then it has appeared in the Witcher 2, and now, the Witcher 3.

The Moonblade is located in Velen. You’ll need to make your way south from the Hanged Man’s Tree and cross the river. Here, dive down into the river and scour the bottom for a skeleton in a sunken boat. It’s no surprise that you’ll run into some Drowners lurking below but simply whip out your crossbow and you can dispatch them quickly.

You’ll come across a locked chest near the skeleton. Luckily, Mr. Bones has a key that you can loot from his carcass to unlock the chest.

The Moonblade is a strategic weapon that you can choose to discover early on at the 8th level. But the question is, what level is the most convenient for you to finally wield this blade? The Moonblade perks depend solely on what level you’re on; the perks increase the higher your level is, and vice versa for the lower your level is.

This weapon will be a solid bet for any level you’re at, plus, it vastly outweighs the damage inflicted by any other weapon  you can grab early on in the game. Essentially, you can’t go wrong with it.

  • +1% - 5% Yrden Sign - With the Moonblade, the strength of your Yrden Sign, the trusty circular magic trap, is increased depending on your level.
  • +10% - 60% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash.
  • +1% - 5% Critical hit - Coupled with the damage bonus, this duo is essential for defeating your foes quickly.

10. Bloodsword - Best for Bleeding

Bloodsword

Things are about to get messy. The Bloodsword is located in the Skellige Isles on the main continent to the East of Fayrlund. You’ll come across some ruins that have a treasure chest partially submerged in the ground that contains the fully forged Bloodsword.

Meant for hard hitting kills, the Bloodsword lives up to its name with its increased chance to cause bleeding to your opponents. You also have a high critical hit bonus to inflict on those annoying enemies that just won’t yield to death’s hand.

  • +5-20% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash.
  • +1-4% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +9% Chance to cause bleeding - Increasing your chance to cause bleeding will work in your favor when you have a difficult enemy.
  • +1-2% Chance to dismember - Dismember your foes and deal a hefty amount of damage to them.

9. Ursine Crossbow - Best for Aerial and Underwater Enemies

Ursine Crossbow

The Ursine Crossbow is an absolute game changer. While crossbows aren’t a primary weapon in the Witcher 3, they’re perfect for quickly dispatching underwater and aerial enemies. Part of the Bear School gear, the Ursine Crossbow is located in the Skellige Isles.

Take a boat to the island and go south from the Old Watchtower. There, you’ll find a cave. Head into the cave, climb up some ledges, and you’ll run right into the diagram to craft the Ursine Crossbow.

This crossbow definitely would have come in handy when fighting that griffin at the beginning of The Witcher 3. I think this weapon is so underrated because it’s not a hardy sword, however, when it comes to knocking your foes out of the sky, its power might convince you to use it for regular land combat.

  • +210% Attack Power - Yes, you read that right; 210% increase in your attack power. Your enemies are going to be dropping like flies when they’re hit.
  • +1% Adrenaline Point gain - Any increase in adrenaline points is going to make a massive difference when using your adrenaline rush.
  • +2% Critical hit damage bonus - Increase your chances of a damage bonus and dispatch your enemies quicker.
  • +5% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +15% bonus experience from monsters - Boost your bonus experience every time you kill a monster.

8. Teigr - Best for Its Quest

Teigr

What’s convenient about the Teigr sword is that you don’t have to go through the trouble of crafting it, you can simply equip it. However, when completing the quest to find it, you’re going to want to make sure you choose the correct choices.

Head to Oreton Village south of Crows Perch in Velen. Slay theAlgouls then use your Witcher senses to follow clues throughout the deserted village.

You’ll find a little girl that will explain what happened at the village. Then, you’ll be prompted to track down a Witcher named Gaetan, the Witcher who went mad and massacred the village. Gaetan is close by, and once you find him you’ll have the option to either fight him or spare him. This is where you’re going to want to assess your level, your skills, and the strength of your gear.

Gaetan is a powerful Witcher, but if you choose to fight him and are successful in killing him, the Teigr sword will spawn on his corpse. If you decide to spare him, he will reveal the location of his secret stash which will prompt you with another quest to loot his things. This is where you’ll be able to loot the Teigr sword.

What’s cool about the Teigr is the quest that I like to think of as a testament to ethos. Gaetan slaughters innocent people, but his story is one of betrayal and misfortune that led him down his dark path. Does he deserve to die? Or does he deserve mercy? It's up to you to decide.

  • +15% Aard sign - Carrying this weapon will boost your Aard Sign and allow you to blast your enemies with a greater intensity, resulting in an easier target.
  • +10% critical hit chance - Increase your chance of a critical hit by a whopping 10%
  • +10% chance to cause bleeding - Increasing your chance to cause bleeding will work in your favor when you have a difficult enemy.
  • +5% bonus experience from humans and nonhumans - Gain bonus experience from dispatching humans and monsters.

7. Viper Venomous Silver Sword - Best for Perks

Viper Venomous Silver Sword

The Viper Venomous Silver Sword is another weapon that cannot be crafted. Exclusive to the Hearts of Stone Expansion Pack, you only have one chance to find this sword before it disappears for good. You’re given the chance to find the sword when you choose to help Olgierd towards the conclusion of the expansion.

Geralt is immediately thrown into a shadowy realm. Follow the path that leads to a glowing area and jump up the broken stairs. You’ll find the Viper Venomous Silver Sword protruding from a rock.

This sword gives you a load of perks that will make defeating foes incredibly easy. Aard is probably my favorite sign to use because not only is it fun to blast your opponents, it’s also super effective. The Viper Venomous Silver Sword will make it all the more fun.

  • +25% Aard Sign -  Carrying this weapon will boost your Aard Sign and allow you to blast your enemies with a greater intensity, resulting in an easier target.
  • +75% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash
  • +10% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +15% Chance to poison - You’ll have a 10% chance to poison your enemy when you land a blow, increasing your odds of defeating your enemy quicker if they do get poisoned and their health meter declines even more rapidly.
  • +20% Bonus experience from monsters - Gain bonus experience from dispatching monsters.

6. Harpy Relic Silver Sword - Best for Heavy Damage

Harpy Relic Silver Sword

The Harpy Relic Silver Sword is located in White Orchard south of Woesong Village. Make your way along the beach until you find a couple of Drowners near a boat crash site. Once you kill the Drowners you can loot through the remains of the crash site and you’ll find the diagram for the Harpy in a chest.

The Harpy requires a level 37 to craft, but it’s well worth the wait. This sword has a massive amount of damage that reaches up to 523, and while it only has one primary perk of increasing bleeding, the heavy damage makes up for it.

  • +10% chance to cause bleeding - The chance of bleeding is super helpful in depleting your enemies health when you’re not actively attacking them.

5. Mastercrafted Ursine Silver Sword - Best for Adrenaline Points

Mastercrafted Ursine Silver Sword

You can find the Mastercrafted Ursine Silver Sword in Velen. Go south of Crows Perch and cross the water to the “Monsters Nest” location. There, you’ll find a chest where you can loot the diagram for the sword.

This sword is unmatched with its critical hit damage bonus and bonus experience from monsters. The adrenaline point gain is also a huge perk for when you want to use your adrenaline rush and make your signs even more strong.

  • +20% Adrenaline Point gain - Any increase in adrenaline points is going to make a massive difference when using your adrenaline rush.
  • +75% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash
  • +5% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +14% Chance to dismember - Though morbid, dismembering your enemies will work to your advantage.
  • +20% Bonus experience from monsters - Gain bonus experience from dispatching monsters.

4. Belhaven Blade - Best for Critical Hit Bonus

Belhaven Blade

To find the Belhaven Blade, go to eastern Toussaint across the river from the Mere-Lachaiselongue Cemetery. You’re going to come across some bandits that you need to fight. Dispatch them and you’ll find a stool with some blue fairy dust. Loot the nearby key and the papers.

After you read through the papers, your quests will be updated with one called “Waiting For Goe and Doh”. You’re going to be led into the middle of the water where you’ll find a wrecked ship that has a chest with the Belhaven Blade diagram.

What’s than a stellar blade with a 100% critical hit damage bonus? This perk along with a high chance to poison and an even higher Aard Sign intensity is going to maximize your efficiency in combat.

  • +30% Aard Sign intensity - Carrying this weapon will boost your Aard Sign and allow you to blast your enemies with a greater intensity, resulting in an easier target.
  • +100% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash
  • +15% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +15% Chance to poison - You’ll have a 10% chance to poison your enemy when you land a blow, increasing your odds of defeating your enemy quicker if they do get poisoned and their health meter declines even more rapidly.
  • +5% Bonus experience from humans and nonhumans - Gain bonus experience from dispatching monsters and humans.

3. Gesheft Silver Sword - Best for Aard Intensity

Gesheft Silver Sword

To acquire the diagram for the Gesheft, head north of the Brasane Farm in Toussaint and follow the river until you reach a cave. As you make your way through the cave you’ll come across a little camp where you can loot a chest with the Gesheft diagram.

The Gesheft grants you over 1,000 damage towards your enemy, making this blade a true force to be reckoned with. All of its perks will make you incredibly efficient when killing your enemies while also giving you a ton of bonus points in the process. This is a great sword for short fights because of the massive critical hit bonus.

  • +5% Bonus experience from monsters - Gain bonus experience from dispatching monsters.

2. The Toussaint Knight's Steel Sword - Best for Piercing Armor

Toussaint Knight's Steel Sword

The second best Witcher 3 weapon is the Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword located in Toussaint. Head to the Arthach Palace Ruins. Once there, secure the area and head into the ruins where you’ll find a ladder to climb.

You’re going to come across a knight known as Antoine “Starling'' Straggen. After you defeat the pretentiously named foe , loot his belongings and you’ll find the diagram for the Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword.

With up to 955 damage, the Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword is unmatched. What seals the deal for me is that this sword is not only great for killing monsters, but with a 300 armor piercing perk it’s the best word in the game for fighting humans, especially guards.

  • +300 Armor piercing - You won’t have any trouble fighting off guards or other armored humans with this weapon.
  • +30% Quen Sign intensity - Boost the strength of your Quen shield and make it harder for enemies to penetrate.
  • +100% Critical hit damage bonus - This is a huge damage bonus that will get you in and out of battle in a flash.
  • +20% Critical hit chance - An increased critical hit chance will come in handy at any point in your battle.
  • +15% Chance to cause burning - Similar to bleeding, burning your enemy is a huge perk as they continuously lose health throughout the battle.

1. Aerondight Silver Sword - Best of The Best

 Aerondight Silver Sword

Finally we’ve reached the magnum opus of weapons in The Witcher 3: The Aerondight Silver Sword. You can find this relic sword in the Blood and Wine expansion pack “There can only be one” secondary quest. Travel west of Corvo Bianco towards a little island in the middle of a lake.

When you arrive at the lake you’ll find that the sword is protected by a hermit. In order to acquire the sword you have to prove your chivalry by fulfilling five chivalric virtues. Once you complete these five virtues the hermit will assess you and your last challenge will be to fight him. After defeating the hermit, the lady of the lake will emerge to grace you with the sword.

This sword is undoubtedly the most powerful sword in The Witcher 3 because of its unique charging ability. Each blow from the sword generates a charge that boosts the sword's damage by 10%, and when fully charged, the sword generates critical damage with every hit.

Killing enemies with a fully charged Aerondight will cause the damage on the sword to permanently increase based on your level. This sword is a challenge to get, but you’ll find that the hassle is worth it in the end as you can whirl the sword around and execute hundreds of blows, killing enemies and charging the sword at the same time.

  • +60% Damage - With over half of the damage increase, you’re going to be dissipating your enemies at a fraction of the time.
  • +50% Blinding - Easily blind your enemies and give yourself the upper hand.
  • +50% Incineration -  Inflict continuous loss of vitality for your enemies.
  • +50% Precise hit - Increase your chances of precise hit by 50%.
