About - Michael Wilson: Michael was six years old when he was first handed a Gameboy Advance, with a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance already booted up and ready to play. He has loved games ever since, slowly working his way through handheld systems until he could finally afford the larger, more television-ready consoles. Over the past two decades, Michael has earned both a B.A. and an MFA in Creative Writing. Never once has he stopped playing games, and actively strives to find a synthesis between his love for writing, his passion for games, and his critical thinking skills. Not content to just idly enjoy a game, Michael is interested in why a game captures, compels, and sits firmly in our minds as “unforgettable.” He has the most experience with story-drive, single-person games, and feels drawn to the natural wonder and isolation of games like Metroid Prime and Legend of Zelda. More recently, his expertise on narrative tactics has led him to a number of independent games that push against the expectations and tropes of “what a game can be”—Return of the Obra Dinn, Hades, and Celeste, to name but a few in recent memory. For Michael, game criticism is the perfect intersection between his professional academic experience and his decades-long hobby. Whether min-maxing a character, exploring a lost city, or hunting ghosts with friends, Michael finds the most joy in being able to play and to share that experience with anyone who will listen.
