One of the greatest things about Animal Crossing is the friendships you make with the villagers in your town. With the release of New Horizons just around the corner, there’s nothing more exciting than wondering who your new neighbors could be. Will they be animals you’ve met from previous games or an entirely new roster? There are over 450 villagers in total, so how can we possibly decide who’s best? We’ll always have our personal favorites, of course, but let’s take a look at the following hand-picked villagers that tend to shine a little brighter than the rest.

12. Tipper

Tipper is a snooty personality type villager who first appeared in Wild World. She even has a spot on the cover of the K.K. Flamenco album.

What's great about Tipper:

  •  Her name refers to cow tipping
  •  She does not take milk in her coffee
  •  She always has good gossip to share

11. Stitches

Stitches is a lazy personality type villager who first appeared in Wild World. He has been a major hit with fans due to his adorable, teddy bear design. 

What's great about Stitches:

  • He’s easy to get along with
  • He’s very laid back 
  • He’s one of three villagers that aren’t actually animals

10. Lionel

Lionel is a smug personality type villager who first appeared in New Leaf. He has a distinctly military aesthetic, right down to the little uniform jacket that he wears when you first meet him.

What's great about Lionel:

  • He has excellent manners, always a gentleman
  • His appearance is distinctly reminiscent of Colonel Sanders
  • He gets along with most villagers

9. Lucky

Lucky is a lazy personality type villager who has appeared in every Animal Crossing game so far. His tragic appearance has made him one of the more iconic and distinctive villagers in the series. 

What's great about Lucky:

  • He wants to become a doctor
  • He might actually be a zombie
  • His home has an Egyptian theme to match his mummy appearance

8. Chevre

Chevre is a normal personality type village who has been in every single game to date. Her home has a fun, European aesthetic, which makes sense when paired with her French name. 

What's great about Chevre:

  • She’s the only goat to have appeared in every game
  • She gets along with most villagers 
  • She is very ambitious 

7. Lobo

Lobo is a cranky personality type villager who has been in every single game to date. He is one of the most popular wolf villagers and he is very competitive when it comes to fishing. 

What's great about Lobo:

  • He has hilarious, off the wall dialogue
  • He always has good gossip ready to share
  • He’s a reliable friend once you get past his grumpy exterior

6. Bunnie

Bunnie is a peppy personality type villager who has appeared in every single Animal Crossing game so far. She is one of the more recognizable villagers, having appeared on the back cover of City Folk, and appearing in the promotional art for New Horizons. 

What's great about Bunnie:

  • She’s always in a great mood
  • She provides exciting, energetic conversations
  • Her design is based on ringo usagi, a way to cut apples so they look like rabbits

5. Tangy

Tangy is a peppy personality type villager who has been in every single game to date. She is quite popular due to her creative, distinct appearance. 

What's great about Tangy:

  • She’s always ready to party 
  • She looks like a tangerine
  • She decorates her house in a citrus theme 

4. Marshal

Marshal is a smug personality type villager who first appeared in New Leaf. Fans quickly fell in love with him for his grouchy face and kind heart, leading him to quickly become one of the most popular villagers.

What's great about Marshal:

  • He gets along with most villagers
  • His denim jacket makes him look adorably tough 
  • He’s highly sought-after as a neighbor by fans of the series 

3. Bob

Bob is a lazy personality type villager who has been in every single Animal Crossing game so far. He is popular with fans of the game, and he has become quite iconic due to a meme that originated from a Pocket Camp error message stating “No one’s around to help.”

What's great about Bob:

  • He is extremely chill and easy to get along with   
  • His kiddie-themed house pairs well with his playful attitude
  • He isn’t afraid to wear pink

Marina is a normal personality type villager who first appeared in Animal Forest e+ as an islander, and then reappeared in Wild World as a villager and became a regularly appearing villager in the series. Her cutesy design has made her very popular with Animal Crossing fans.

1. Rosie

Rosie is arguably one of the most iconic and recognizable Animal Crossing villagers. She’s a peppy personality type villager who has been in every single game to date, as well as appearing on several game covers in the series. She even had a part in the Animal Crossing movie Dōbutsu no Mori.

What's great about Rosie:

  • She’s always happy to see you
  • She provides exciting, energetic conversations
  • She’s kind to everyone around town
