[Top 3] Final Fantasy 7 Remake Best Sonon Builds
The staff is the ultimate weapon!

I’ve already talked about Yuffie, so now it’s time to talk about her comrade, Sonon. Sadly, you can’t directly control Sonon, but you can issue commands and do synchronized attacks with Yuffie.

When it comes to Sonon, he uses a staff as his main weapon, and he is on the frontlines constantly as he is more durable than Yuffie. The main point of Sonon is to draw away the enemies from Yuffie and have them focus on him during battles.

Sonon comes from Wutai, and his mission is to accompany Yuffie in the mission of stealing materia and restoring their homeland’s former glory. He has a tragic past, as his sister was killed by a Shinra mech in the “Wutai War.” The whole point of his story is to accompany Yuffie on her mission.

Sonon Strengths:

  • Being much more durable than Yuffie.
  • Always on the frontlines.
  • Able to do deadly, devastating synchronized attacks with Yuffie.
  • Able to support Yuffie in any way possible during battles.
  • Able to draw enemies on himself.

3. Magic Tank Build

To get to her, you’ll have to get through me first!

A build that you might not expect for Sonon is a magic tank. The weapon that this build uses is the “Djinn Staff.” The weapon mostly focuses on boosting Sonon's magic damage, elemental damage, and the damage of synchronized attacks with Yuffie.

Another thing about this build is that it has supportive spells for Yuffie, such as cure, raise, and barrier, so that she stays alive longer and deals the damage. There are also some offensive spells in this build so that Sonon can deal damage.

It’s important to acquire an accessory called “Ribbon” so that it's harder to interrupt Sonon while casting magic. The capability of this build is having enough mana and spells to support Yuffie throughout the battle while also being able to tank damage for her. It also allows Sonon to cast magic without being interrupted.

What Magic Tank Excels In:

  • Being able to support Yuffie in battle with spells.
  • Not being interrupted while casting magic.
  • Being able to tank on the frontlines.
  • Having enough survivability throughout battles.
  • Improving elemental damage immensely.
  • Increasing the damage of all synchronized attacks with Yuffie.

Build Details:

  • Weapon: Djinn Staff - leveled up to the max
  • Armor: Firebird Armlet - 46 physical defenses, 46 magical defenses, 3 materia slots.
  • Accessory: Ribbon - makes it harder to be interrupted while casting magic.
  • Spells: Cure, Raise, Barrier, Fire.
  • Materia for Djinn Staff: Magnify, Cure, Raise, Barrier, Ramuh, Fire.
  • Materia for Firebird Armlet: MP Up, HP Up, Magic Up.
  • Summon: Ramuh

2. Full Physical Damage Build

Take this to the head!

If you want to dispatch your enemies as quickly as possible, then go the full physical damage route. The weapon you'll want to use is the “Indurate Staff,” which gives a whopping 105 physical damage when maxed out. Not only that, but it also gives 50 magic damage. Along with some other stats like increasing HP and critical hit rate by 10%.

When it comes to the armor, the “Chthonian Armlet” is the go to, mainly because it pairs up nicely with the accessory “Gozu Drive,” which increases the character’s damage that’s proportional to the amount of HP they have. The capability of this build is being able to quickly kill enemies and dispatch them. This build is also capable of giving a ton of HP and being tanky on the frontlines to protect Yuffie.

What Full Physical Damage Excels In:

  • Killing a group of enemies quickly.
  • Having a ton of HP.
  • Dealing a lot of damage.
  • Great against crowd control.
  • Having some mana to cast supportive spells such as heal, barrier or revive.

Build Details:

  • Weapon: Indurate Staff - leveled up to the max.
  • Armor: Chthonian Armlet - 42 physical defenses, 42 magical defenses, 4 materia slots.
  • Accessory: Gozu Drive - increases damage dealt proportional to the amount of HP Sonon has.
  • Spells: Cure, Raise.
  • Materia for Indurate Staff: ATB Stagger, Provoke, Steadfast Block, Cure, Raise, Auto-Cure.
  • Materia for Chthonian Armlet: HP Up, HP Up, First Strike, Ramuh.
  • Summon: Ramuh

1. Support Sonon

We are a team after all!

Since you can’t directly control Sonon in the Intermission DLC, his primary role is to support Yuffie and synergize attacks with her. Another great thing about Sonon is the fact that he can take a few hits before going down, which makes him a decent tank.

This build makes him tankier and beefs him up with health so that he doesn't faint easily. The weapon to use for this build is the “Marshalist's Staff,” which gives him 550 HP, 86 physical damage, and 70 magic attack.

Alongside those, to make him even tankier, go with the “Firebird Armlet,” which gives him 46 physical and 46 magical defenses. The capability of this build for Sonon is being able to live through tough battles and support Yuffie. It also allows for quick synergized attacks with her.

What Full Support Excels In:

  • Being tankier.
  • Supporting Yuffie.
  • Having both physical and magic damage.
  • Doing damage with synergized attacks with Yuffie.
  • Having defenses to survive hard hits.
  • Being on the frontlines and tanking damage.

Build Details:

  • Weapon: Marshalist's Staff - leveled up to the max.
  • Armor: Firebird Armlet - 46 physical defenses, 46 magical defenses, 3 materia slots.
  • Accessory: Kindred Cord.
  • Spells: Cure.
  • Materia for Marshalist's Staff: ATB Stagger, Time, Magnify, Cure, First Strike, Ninja Cannonball.
  • Materia for Firebird Armlet: HP Up, HP Up, Ramuh.
  • Summon: Ramuh
